Zootourism.com review: Mission La Purisima Concepcion 2295 Purisima Road Lompoc, CA 93436 United States 805-733-3713 http://www.lapurisimamission.orgThe eleventh mission set up by the Franciscans on their way through Alta California, La Purisima Concepcion is a reconstructed outpost out in the central Californian countryside, near the town of Lompoc. The mission now keeps a handful of animals in the restored corral. The animals are essentially domestics, but are specifically of period breeds – these animals are the types that were present at the mission during its heyday in the late 1700s. The actual farm is fairly small here, but an interesting diversion – a small historical zoo as it were. There are a handful of chickens and turkeys, a few horses, a few burros. A lone New Mexico longhorn stands guard in his pen. A goat hangs out with a small herd of dreadlocked sheep. The mission itself is very pleasant, and the grounds nice. The added little touch of life really sets it apart as an additional kid-friendly side trip. | |
