Zootourism.com review: Port Townsend Marine Science Center Fort Worden State Park Port Townsend, WA 98368 United States 360-385-5582 http://www.ptmsc.orgPort Townsend’s contribution to the Olympic Peninsula’s marine centers is tucked away in a large state park. Like the other nearby centers, there are a handful of touch tanks (sea stars, anemones, crabs), a half-dozen display tanks (rockfish, shrimp, and a disguise-prone decorator crab), and a baby octopus to the side. Where it differs from the others is in its additional offerings. The center runs wildlife cruises seasonally. It also has an auxiliary building across the street focusing on the natural history of the area with a focus on the sea. Various seabird and marine mammal skeletons are on display, a few displays on local geology and global warming, ultra-soft otter fur, and an interesting collection of sand from around the world with some explanations of the differences. You might go for the aquarium, and it’s a nice little one, but you’ll stay because you suddenly realize you have an interest in sand crystals. | |
