Just off of busy Interstate 5 in San Diego County (and just south of the breast-like San Onofre nuclear towers), a Vista Point in the midst of Camp Pendleton has a special treat for the weary traveler: ground squirrels. Rather than a captive population, this is a wild colony. It’s likely though, given the girth of some of the squirrels, that they’ve gone a little less wild and get most of their food from travelers’ handouts at this point. Also as a result, they tend to be less timid around visitors. Stop by on the way through, get an outstanding ocean view, and hang out with the squirrels a bit.
